Cisco has a cheap IP phone solution Posted 8.29.2002 @ 20:26:51 EDT by Deuce
I was on the web the other day looking for a cheap way to do IP telephony point to point. No frills, just talk. I came upon a discontinued item made by Creative Labs that seems to have all but evaporated form existance. It is called the VoIP Blaster. It uses your PC to do the codec translation and the unit is about the size of a handeheld tape recorder. You just plug a $6 phone into it, configure the device to talk to the remote unit you purchased, based on hardware address, make sure your cable or DSL connection to the internet is up and you can talk...anywhere in the world. Well, these are all but gone.
However, Cisco has a simlilar unit (buy them in pairs, about $250 ea) that work the same way. Of course they are more expensive, but hey, thats Cisco. Quality costs. The product is the ATA186. Same story, same config, same $6 phone. If you talk to someone out of the country, or across the country like I do, to the woman who holds my heart, then you should look into this item. Telcos have every corner of the market. So let's take one back. ")

SCO Name retained Posted 8.29.2002 @ 20:14:51 EDT by Deuce
The company formerly known as Caldera International has changed its name to The SCO Group, which will be formal pending shareholder approval. The new name draws upon the company's significant brand recognition in its SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare product lines. In addition, the renaming enables solution providers to use the strength of the SCO brand when selling Linux solutions, including SCO's Linux-based product powered by UnitedLinux to be released later this year.

"The name change to SCO from Caldera builds on a strong market position which we will extend as we reinvent the SCO brand," said Darl McBride, president and CEO of SCO. "For more than two decades, the SCO name has been synonymous with reliability, stability and cost efficiency. Now, the coexistence and collaboration of UNIX and Linux systems from a single source offers our customers and channel partners a powerful choice of solutions, backed by a name that powers millions of servers around the world -- SCO."

In addition, the Caldera Partner Program will now be known as TeamSCO, reflective of the name change for the company. A new offering, SCOx, has been added to TeamSCO and you can find more information regarding this program on our website.
